8月7日は旧暦の８月１５日、お月見の日です。今は暦（カレンダー）が変わりましたが、昔のカレンダーでは８月だったのです。季節は「中秋」秋の最中ということです。今のカレンダーとのずれを感じます。満月と１日ずれますが、これは月齢０の新月（朔）の日を１日としているのでずれることのほうが多いのです。（満月になる時刻によっては同日になることもあります。）

北米ネイティブ・アメリカンでは「秋分（Autumnal equinox）」に近い満月を「Full Harvest Moon（フル・ハーベスト・ムーン）」「収穫月」と呼ばれます。秋分の農作物の収穫の時期だからです。秋分の日が今年は２３日で、かならず９月になるわけではなく、この「Harvest Moon」は１０月になることもあります。今年はこの９月の月が「フル・ハーベスト・ムーン」となります。この満月のころには月明りのおかげで遅くまで収穫作業をすることができます。月が昇るのも北米やヨーロッパでは日没後１０～２０分後ですから夕方の薄明後も収穫作業時間をあたえてくれる月明りは重要です。北米やヨーロッパでは、トウモロコシ、カボチャ、豆。インドでは野生の米の収穫に重要な役割をしていたそうです。

これはもネイティブアメリカンでの名前です。先月の「Barlry Moon」は英国での呼び名でしたが、こちらは北米での大麦（Barlry）の収穫の時期ということでこの名前が伝えられているようです。
